Delivery day is generally way
less stressful than moving day. Delivery day signifies the light at the end of
the tunnel, after all. However, the move isn't completely finished once the
movers arrive at your new home. There's still a lot of work to be done --
fortunately, as long as you're organized, it shouldn't be too big of a hassle.
The following are some of the things that you will have to do come delivery
day:
- Make
sure someone is there - Either you or a designee will
need to be at the final location in order to accept delivery and to provide
access to the property, including the house and the garage or shed where you
want boxes to be placed.
- Provide
instructions - First of all, you'll need to show
the movers where you want them to come in and out of the house. Then, someone
is going to have to direct them to where they should place boxes and furniture.
The movers will take furniture up to the bedrooms where they need to go so that
you don't have to do any heavy lifting later. If you can't be there, then you
need to provide these instructions to your stand-in or, at the very least,
provide a floor map for each room that the movers can follow.
- Check
your inventory - You should have an inventory
list. If you've labeled your boxes properly, then it shouldn't be difficult to
cross check. Make sure you check off every item that comes off the moving truck
to ensure that all of your belongings are accounted for.
- Check
for damage - As furniture comes off the truck,
take the time to inspect it for damage. If anything was damaged during
transport, make sure that you make note of it on your inventory and that you
take pictures of the damage.
- Sign
the bill of lading - Before you sign off on the
delivery on the bill of lading, note any missing items or damage so that you
can file a claim later.
- Pay
the movers - Once the move is complete, you'll
have to pay the movers. If you have a stand-in handling the delivery, provide
them with a certified check to pay with.
